Murals in Homage to 13 Baktun
San Juan La Laguna by Francisco Sandoval.
The Tz’tujil town of San Juan La Laguna is located on the southwest bay of Lake Atitlán. It sits against the foothills of the Rostro Maya, a sacred mountain summit that is reminiscent of a Mayan face gazing skyward. Known for its authenticity and tranquility, now there is something else that sets San Juan La Laguna apart.
According to the Mayan calendar 13 Baktun, originally called Oxlajuj Bajtún, Dec. 21, 2012, marked the end of a 5,000+ year cycle. This time marker became a mystical date for Guatemalans and for many others worldwide. Expectations, doubts, mysteries, even fatalities were predicted.
Deeply inspired by this event, 12 talented local artists created murals in homage to 13 Baktun. The essence of their work speaks of transformation, new beginnings, renewal and breakthrough. The largest of the murals is approximately 6 meters wide; they adorn the walls of many San Juan houses, making your stroll through the town a memorable experience.
